Preview to Dentistry is a course designed for pre-dental students and students considering dentistry as a career. Coursework and lab activities expose pre-dental students to the art, science and practice of dentistry. Course objectives intend for students to:
- Learn about the science of dentistry, the various dental disciplines and recent developments in research and biotechnology, through classroom and clinical experiences
- Develop an understanding of the implications of oral health on individuals and communities, Kentucky’s health disparities; underserved rural and urban communities and disadvantaged populations and social justice
- Develop an understanding of the basic sciences as they relate to clinical dentistry
- Learn the “language” and terminology of dentistry
- Begin to develop hand skills through pre-clinical laboratory experiences
- Gain understanding of public and private dental practices, free and reduced fee dental services, local and regional dental clinics offered through AHEC/HETC programs across the state
- Become familiar with the admissions process
- Explore the relationship between Cultural Competency and Ethics in Healthcare
- Understand the importance of inter-professional relationships in competent and patient-centered care.
The course consists of lecture/laboratory/clinical observation sessions and a community service experience. The class will primarily meet at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays. (Exception: clinical observation, community service and possible exposure to organized dentistry meeting).
